This was our 3rd annual consecutive visit to Les Petits Cousins du Québec, Domme, always a special treat thanks to our hosts Daniel & Stephanus. This week was specified as a “Foodie Week” yet another attraction to our visit.

The location of Domme is so special being classified as one of the most beautiful villages of France and occupies a splendid position high above the Dordogne River. The village is lovely and the views are a bonus as is the cave system that sits right underneath the main square. From the main square, the Place de la Halle, wander down the adjacent streets. All of them reveal interesting architecture ranging from colombage (half-timber) buildings, to steep périgourdine roofs, to small turrets and also some of them lead to the different stone gateways in the walls surrounding Domme.

The Dordogne River is a feast for canoe enthusiasts with hire facilities in abundance, to watch the mass of participants leisurely drifting down the river from the Domme Square is a must!

Although on occasions their tasks will overlap, Daniel & Stephanus look after different aspects to fulfil your holiday expectations. Invariably, Daniel will pick you up upon arrival and transport you to the B&B, during your stay he will provide your transport and support you as a Tour Facilitator to the endless places of interest in the Region. His knowledge of the Region is invaluable but he is always “up” for finding something new. While Stephanus will be hard at work in the kitchen preparing the endless local dishes plus his own specialities. You will never go hungry on this holiday! Stephanus also over-sees house keeping to ensure your stay is “home from home”.

The “Foodie Week” was an adventure in itself, in addition to wine pairing with Charcuterie and a selection of Cheeses, a visit to a local family wine producer where the white wines were completely different dependent upon which side of the hillside the vines were growing.

Throughout the area you will find fields of Walnut trees providing not only the actual whole nut but the nuts which get ground down to produce Walnut Oil. We witnessed the extensive oil producing process with the opportunity to taste and purchase the product.

The whole Group made a visit to the Le Petit Léon restaurant in Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère for a special lunch-time menu in this Michelin Star Restaurant.

Our five-course lunch was paired with appropriate wines selected by Sina, a trained Sommelier and wife of the chef / owner Nick Honeyman. I think everyone enjoyed the experience and needed our short walk by the local river to recover.

During cooking workshop, Stephanus set the cooking participants a hard task! We were challenged to cook a menu which Stephanus had not tried before.

Our starter was pâté de foie gras with a Fig stuffing (Stephanus had thankfully already prepared this! )

Main Course was Filet de Pork stuffed with a mixture of meat, sun-dried tomatoes, cream & oil. The Filet was cooked in a “water bath” and then flash fried to finish.

Vegetables were a layered compression of carrots, courgettes, aubergines and butternut squash. Each vegetable was thinly sliced before being laid out in layers bushed with garlic infused butter and then repeated until the cooking dish was full. After 30 minutes in the oven, it was finished off by dividing into individual portions before flash frying.

Dessert was all made from scratch; pastry case filled with custard / crème pâtissière topped off with fresh strawberries.

The entire meal catered for a hunger group of 14 people, Stephanus’s patience, ability to impart instructions and unique way to make the experience FUN is a gift we all enjoyed. Well Done.

The only problem with our stay is that time goes too fast!!! Don’t worry we’ll be back.

Take a look at the web site and start to fall in love with the whole Domme experience.

Daniel and Stephanus:

'Thank you' hardly seems to be adequate words for an incredible week of fun, laughter, exploring, learning, adventures, great meals and new friendships.

Together, you bring a whole new meaning to the word hospitality.  You have a way of making each of us feel as though we're the only guest you've ever had.  Yet, you can put a group of strangers together around a beautiful dining room table and create a family for the next 7 days.

Thank you for creating a setting that brings lasting memories.   How can I ever forget canoeing on the magical Dordogne River; ending with Daniel taking off his shoes and socks and rolling up his pants,  so he could wade through water and rocks to pull us to shore!   The indescribable caves and castles; the mouthwatering meals prepared by Stephanus and served as if we were kings and queens;  the picnic lunches that despite some rain and cold brought our little 'family' closer as we chatted and laughed; and of course, the surprise flowers and cake to celebrate an anniversary that will never be forgotten.

Les Petits Cousins du Quebec never felt like a business, it felt like a home.  Your kindness, sincerity, and genuine care made it hard for me to say good-bye.

Merci beaucoup, for an unforgettable week.

Dear Daniel & Stephanus:

We were fortunate to spend two amazing weeks with you at Les Petits Cousins du Quebec.  Both weeks created an unforgettable journey through the Dordogne area of France.  So many breathtaking views and beautiful villages but Domme was by far our favourite.  The Caves, Chateaux/Castles gave us great insight to French history - each tour was so well planned and Daniel's attention to detail and his passion for history came through on each excursion.  The blend of natural wonders and cultural treasures made our time with at Les Petits Cousins both adventurous and meaningful.

The Foodie Week brought forth a feast not just for the palate but for all the senses.  The excursions to the vineyards, the walnut orchard, the charcuterie pairing with wine were beyond our expectations.  Our meal at the Michelin Star restaurant was delicious - the food and wine pairing was truly harmonious.  However, we were fortunate to have outstanding cuisine each day as Stephanus carefully planned delicious menus for breakfast, lunch picnics and dinner.  The highlight was cooking in the kitchen with Stephanus.  His culinary expertise was so willingly shared with the group - the meal created for 14 guests was a symphony of flavours and so artfully presented.

Your amazing talent for bringing people together was reflected with two distinctly different groups of guests.  We were pleased to make new contacts with people from Surrey in the UK, Cornwall, Sault St.Marie, Niagara and Fergus.  It was a pleasure sittings around the breakfast table and the dinner table sharing stories and reflections on our time at Les Petits Cousins.

We left Domme with happy hearts, full stomachs and inspiration to explore new recipes in our kitchen.

Thank you so much for your generosity, hospitality and all the wonderful memories.

Joan & Ron.
